“The Amethyst’s Secrets” Inheritance Anthology

Celebrating the Release of “Inheritance” and the Legacy of “The Amethyst’s Secrets”

Today marks a significant moment in my writing journey with the release of the anthology Inheritance, which includes my poem, “The Amethyst’s Secrets.

This piece is particularly close to my heart as it was inspired by my “Ma,” my late mother-in-law.

Ma was a woman of strength, humor, and resilience—qualities that shone through even in the most challenging times. She visited us during the week of our birthdays, bringing with her a treasured early gift—an amethyst—and the promise to tell me the history of her family’s escape from Ukraine to Canada during the Russian Revolution in 1912.

However, life had other plans. Ma passed away unexpectedly early the next day—on my birthday—before she could tell me the whole story.

The Amethyst’s Secrets” is my attempt to honor her. It allowed me to explore the emotions tied to her loss, the weight of the history she carried, and the lingering mystery of the stories that remain untold.

What makes this release even more poignant is imagining how Ma would react to all of this. She once told me she didn’t believe anyone would be interested in her story. Yet here we are, with Inheritance reaching 49 countries, including Ukraine and Russia—places deeply connected to her life and legacy.

It’s humbling to consider how amethyst, a stone with rich symbolism in Jewish and Russian cultures, might resonate with this journey. In this light, Ma’s story reaching these corners of the world feels even more significant, as if her dreams, once dismissed, are now a cherished part of a shared heritage
