“Circus of Shadows”: Unveiling Truth through Critical Thinking

In today’s digital age, where the lines between truth and fiction blur, poetry emerges as a powerful tool for clarity and discernment. My poem, “Circus of Shadows,” part of Moonstone’s anthology reflecting on the January 6, 2021 insurrection, navigates the murky waters of contemporary propaganda.

Moonstone has consistently supported poets who address pressing societal issues. The January 6 insurrection, with its vivid scenes of chaos and calls of “Hang Mike Pence,” highlighted the thin line democracy walks amid a sea of misinformation and fervent rhetoric.

Through my roles as a poet and educator, I advocate for the power of words to inspire change. “Circus of Shadows” transcends mere poetic narrative; it is a critical exploration of the narratives we consume. In the grand theater of political and social life, where truth often wears the mask of fiction, mastering the art of critical thinking is crucial.

The January 6 events were a stark reminder of the perils of misinformation. As we approach another election, the echoes of past events serve as a cautionary tale, underscoring the importance of analytical skills and critical judgment.

“Circus of Shadows” is an invitation to cut through the dense fog of rhetoric and emotional manipulation, advocating for a foundation of truth in the whirlwind of propaganda. Alongside the voices of over 60 poets in this collection, my poem underscores the vital need for vigilance and the ability to discern truth from falsehood.

We, as educators, writers, and citizens, have the responsibility to nurture and develop the ability to critically evaluate and understand the undercurrents shaping our reality. This skill empowers us to direct our societal narrative towards a future rooted in informed understanding and genuine truth.

“Circus of Shadows” aims to illuminate this path, offering insights into the challenging yet essential task of distinguishing reality in a deceptive world.

I encourage you to join in this pursuit of clarity and confidence, fortifying our collective ability to resist the tide of propaganda.
